I also decided that I'm going to try some vegetables out on our little balcony. I got some tomatoes and some orange bell peppers. I've never grown vegetables in a pot before, so we'll see how they do.
I got two types of tomatoes to try them out. One is an early girl (supposedly it gives you tomatoes in 50 days).

The other one is a Patio tomato plant. They've made it so the plant is more stalky so they're easier to grow in a pot.

And still to come... (My poor peppers. I ran out of potty soil.)

I love patio gardens. I would recommend osmocote for your veggies, you could even sprinkle a bit on your hanging basket. It is a 3 month slow release fertilizer and it works great. I love miricle grow potting mix, but it is amazing how fast you go through it. If you have a large pot try putting packing peanuts in the bottom to take up space and leave good drainage then you don't use as much potting soil. Last comment, get a couple wells of water for your veggi plant's they will love it and grow that much faster because it makes it so warm for them. You might also look into a couple tomato cages for support for the plant later as they get bigger. I put my tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets and they did great. I gave all my walls of water and cages away for this year. Maybe we need to start a gardening blog...
BTW which one of your sisters does bees? I would love to talk to her we are thinking of putting two bee hives on our property. I read on her blog the other day and she also does chickens, I want chickens too. We will see how far I get this year. Well I was chatty wasn't I.
I'm excited for you to have a garden! We still haven't done anything w/ our whole 1/16th acre yet this year! :) I better get on it or I'm gonna be so sad when its time to harvest. You are the best! Good luck w/ your garden.
Potty soil? Sick! I guess you don't need as much fertilizer that way, though.
Good job! Our poor hanging plants didn't do too well last year but hopefully we've learned and they live longer this year! I hope your veggi plants go well too! That will be fun!
